Hello, hello, good morning and HAPPY MON-YAY!
You heard me correctly – I just got excited about MONDAY! I get excited about a lot of things – including Monday, one of the most hated days of the week. But I like Monday because I love the sense of a fresh start! If last week had me feeling funky, Monday gives me a feeling of new beginnings. Let’s do it again – only better this time. And that might stem from my Type-A personality or perhaps it’s a by-product of my constant need to feel like I’m improving and growing in some way. I’m not sure that either are healthy, but for now, that’s pretty much how I lead my life.
So Happy Monday!
Funnily enough, I’m not actually here to talk about Monday, but rather, the outfit I chose to wear today.
As a reader of this blog you will also quickly find out that I’m obsessed with all things aesthetic, and that most definitely includes fashion.
Every now and then you’ll find me post an #OOTD (Outfit of the Day) on Insta, or share a look that I’ve pulled together for an event because one of the top five best feelings in the world – for me at least – is pulling together a look that radiates my personality and personal style.
But what is style anyway? For some, it’s keeping up with the latest trends and following all of the top fashion magazines; for others it’s capturing the essence of their favorite style icon in their own wardrobe; for a few, it’s the at the very core of their self-expression. Ultimately, I’d say it’s a bit of each one of those things – but mostly the last one.
“You gotta have style. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it you’re nobody. And I’m not talking about a lot of clothes.” – Diana Vreeland
I love this quote from Diana, former editor-in-chief at Vogue (rest in peace), because she makes a beautiful point. Style isn’t about having a lot of clothes.
Although, I have to admit, I do have a lot of clothes.
I’ve spent a lot of time (maybe more time than I should) considering what kind of clothing, and ultimately, outfits, show the world who I am and who I want to be. And who am I in the first place? There are just so many layers here (pun intended? heh!)
So what is style? In my opinion, it’s swagger – YOUR swagger. Style comes from inside, but is reflected by the clothing we choose to wear. If you want to look at it another way – it’s quite an internal journey in and of itself.
I can put together a super cute outfit in all pink, with a glam up-do… but that’s not ME. Trendy? Maybe. ME? No.
I’m a creative professional, so I love to be funky! But at the same time, I can be kind of an introvert, so I’m not funky enough to wear super bright pieces that dominate the look, because I don’t want to draw THAT much attention to myself. I’m pretty sure I own ONE red sweater, and it is Garnet, which identifies as a ‘gem tone’ anyway… Though I did buy a bright yellow pencil skirt once… after a year of not wearing it, she found her way into the donation pile when I did a closet overhaul this past Spring.
I wear a LOT of black, and gray is probably my favorite non-color-color to wear no matter the season. I get hype on neutrals because they create a professional palette that can either be left alone (like if I’m going to a big interview or a meeting and I need to look business) or spiced up for a regular day in the life of moi!
I love to add spice with color (gem tones, earth tones, and maybe some turquoise), metallics and statement jewelry (and I’m not talking about big costume baubles around my neck).
Today, I chose to add the fire with an over-sized, deep purple, knit scarf for tons of warmth, which I paired with another gem tone on my lips!
I also let my bohemian side shine through with extra rings, and a personalized bangle from my BFF.
Simple bun to keep it, well, simple. And a cozy black flat. (Unfortunately these got soaked recently, and have stretched – I may need to hunt down another pair soon).
So here we are – poppin’ on a Monday morning!
What are you wearing today?
